Eine dramatische Geschichte am Niederrhein

Einführung:

Der Autor Rüdiger Gollnick unternimmt zunächst mit dem Leser bzw. der Leserin eine Zeitreise in eine historische Umbruchsituation vom Mittelalter zur Neuzeit: 1400-1600. In diese Zeit fällt die kulturelle und wirtschaftliche Blütezeit des Niederrheins. Konkrete Zeugnisse finden sich noch heute in allen Städten des unteren Niederrheins: z.B. rechtsrheinisch – Dinslaken, Wesel, Rees, Emmerich, und v.a. linksrheinisch – Kleve, Kalkar, Xanten, Geldern.
Aber es treten auch enorme soziale und wirtschaftliche Spannungen auf:
• Pestepidemien bedrohen die Menschen.
• In der ersten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts entwickelt sich eine ungeheure, letztlich nicht schlüssig erklärbare Kältewelle in Europa (sog. „Kleine Eiszeit“). Schreckliche Hungersnöte sind die Folge. Ein Kampf um das Überleben entbrennt.
• Kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen bedrücken den Niederrhein.
• Pogrome gegen Juden und die Verfolgung von Frauen beginnen, die als Zauberinnen und schließlich als Hexen beschuldigt werden, – ebenfalls Männer als Hexenmeister.

Dämonenglaube und Hexenwahn kennzeichnen auch diese Zeit, die sich in den Hexenprozessen niederschlagen. Aber gleichzeitig wendet sich die Volksfrömmigkeit mit Inbrunst den religiösen Heilsquellen zu, denn es herrscht eine Mentalität von existenzieller Unsicherheit und Endzeitstimmung in breiten Bevölkerungskreisen vor.
Der Leser bzw. die Leserin taucht ein in diese verwirrende Wirklichkeit und begegnet einer liebenden jungen Frau, deren Liebeswunsch unerfüllt bleibt. Die in das Birgitten- Kloster in Xanten-Marienbaum eintritt und dort in eine schwere psychische Krise mit anstößigen Verhaltensauffälligkeiten gerät, so dass sie schließlich jahrelang im Kerkerturm in Dinslaken gefangen gehalten wird. Dies alles führt dazu, dass sie sich als Zauberin und Hexe einem Untersuchungsprozess unterwerfen muss, dessen Umstände dargestellt werden.
Das Buch zeigt auf, dass das Schicksal dieser jungen Frau integriert ist in die historischen Entwicklungen dieser schwierigen Umbruchzeit. Nachvollziehbar werden die Ereignisse zudem in einem dramatischen Szenario.

Introduction to the intention of the book:

We undertake a journey through time to a period of historical upheaval from the Middle Ages to the modern age: fundamental developments take place during this time, from the printing of books to the research results of a Nicolaus Copernicus and a Johannes Kepler, to the findings of a Leonardo da Vinci or Galileo Galilei, to the discoveries of a Columbus or Magellan, to the "worldwide" trade and banking management of the Fuggers and Welsers, the Hanseatic League, to the artistic geniuses such as Michelangelo, Dürer and many others. It is the time of the Renaissance, Humanism and the Reformation. The "Duchy of Cleves" is one of the most important duchies in Europe on the threshold of modern times. The cultural and economic heyday of the Lower Rhine falls in this period (1400-1600):
- the development of a distinct urban culture with an organised administration,
- with schools (Emmerich) and the prospect of founding a univer-sity (Duisburg 1564/1566);
- economically with beer brewers, wool/cloth weavers and with merchants (Rhine shipping, Hanseatic cities: Wesel, Duisburg), furthermore with cattle and grain traders,
- with a relatively stable society of nobility and farmers. Concrete evidence can still be found today in all the towns of the Lower Rhine: on the right bank of the Rhine - Dinslaken, Wesel, Rees, Emmerich, and above all on the left bank - Kleve, Kalkar, Xanten, (Geldern). Together with Duisburg, these towns belong to the so-called seven capitals of the duchy, with the exception of Dinslaken, which is one of the secondary towns of the duchy. But there are also enormous social and economic tensions:
- Plague epidemics threaten the people.
- In the first half of the 15th century, a tremendous cold wave developed in Europe, which could not be explained conclusively in the end. It mainly affected the decade 1430/40 and lasted into the 17th century (the so-called "Little Ice Age"). Terrible famines are the result. A struggle for survival breaks out.
- Warlike conflicts oppress the Lower Rhine.
- Pogroms against Jews and the persecution of women begin, who are accused of being sorceresses and finally witches, - also men as sorcerers.
We learn about the dynamics of the witch trials with their problems. But at the same time, popular piety turns with fervour to religious sources of salvation, as a mentality of existential insecurity and end-of-life mood prevails in broad sections of the population. We dive into this confusing reality and meet a young, loving woman whose desire for love remains unfulfilled, who enters a convent and there falls into a severe psychological crisis with objectionable be-haviour. This leads to her finally having to submit to an investigation process as a sorceress and witch. The book shows that the fate of this young woman is integrated into historical developments.
